Inspiring Somaliland and Central and South Somalia (CSS) Youth through skills training and creation of employment opportunities

Summary

This action builds on AET’s extensive experience of providing non-formal literacy, numeracy and vocational skills training to over 30,000 pastoralists, disabled people, Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and youth in all regions of Somalia over the last 20 years.

The overall objective is to increase opportunities for disadvantaged youth for employment or entrepreneurship.

Objectives

  1. To enable disadvantaged youth to access vocational skills training;
  2. To strengthen transition from vocational training to work;
  3. To integrate entrepreneurship and financial literacy training into Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses.

Target groups

  • 400 young people (50% female) who are outside of education, training and employment.
  • At least 250 of these will be among the most disadvantaged e.g. youth with disabilities and IDPs.

Results

  • 400 young people gain literacy and numeracy skills and are able to access vocational training.
  • 400 young people complete vocational skills and entrepreneurship training.
  • A revolving fund is established and at least 250 young people are able to access micro-finance to establish themselves in business within the project lifetime.
